Gene Kogan
Gene Kogan is an artist, programmer and leading educator in the field of creative AI – who is developing the world’s first decentralized autonomous artist.
Intro:
Gene Kogan is an artist and a programmer who is interested in generative systems, computer science, and software for creativity and self-expression. He is a collaborator within numerous open-source software projects, and gives workshops and lectures on topics at the intersection of code and art. Gene launched ml4a – a free book about machine learning for artists, activists, and citizen scientists – and regularly publishes video lectures, writings, and tutorials to facilitate a greater public understanding of the subject.
Selected AI projects:
Kogan on using artificial intelligence:
How has AI impacted your creative practice?
“It has impacted it at every level. I use many techniques from AI to create artworks, and I also study and write about AI as a subject in itself.”
What excites you most about AI as an artist?
“I think machine learning does to the study of consciousness and cognition what the telescope did to the study of astronomy. It gives us, for the first time, a means of empirically and physically studying it, albeit a crude way which should develop and mature over time. It does this primarily by modeling crowd-sourced datasets, which can be thought of as collections of human experience and perception. This excites me because it gives us a way to study those most mysterious questions that science has been impotent to tackle so far.”
What specific AI / machine learning technologies does you use?
“I am interested in generative models trained on large crowd-sourced datasets to explore the idea of collective imagination, as well as uses of real-time on-the-fly learning for creating interactivity, especially in the context of live performance.”
